Aussies urged to brave the shave this World Cancer Research Day

Join Australian Cancer Research Foundation’s Brave Shave – Tuesday 24 September

Tuesday, 24th September is World Cancer Research Day and Australian Cancer Research Foundation (ACRF) is calling on you to stand with the countless brave Australians who face cancer every day by taking part in its Brave Shave.

Registrations are now open for this year’s Brave Shave which asks participants to shave, cut, or colour their hair for themselves, or someone they love and raise lifesaving funds for cancer research. Every dollar raised will go towards backing brilliant research across Australia that will help prevent, diagnose and treat all types of cancer.

Registering for ACRF’s Brave Shave is easy:

  • Visit acrf.com.au
  • Select Brave Shave and create a fundraising page
  • Invite friends and family to support your shave, cut or colour by donating to cancer research

This year, ACRF is proud to welcome Emily Somers and Alexander Fuchs as Brave Shave ambassadors.

Emily has felt the full impact of cancer after being diagnosed three times, the first just a week before her 27th birthday. She was told she had Hodgkin’s lymphoma which returned only years later despite enduring chemotherapy, radiation and a stem cell transplant. Then in 2019, she was diagnosed with a rare type of cancer called sarcoma. Despite this all, Emily has come out the other side with a beautiful son, Sidney, and a business full of heart aptly named, Bravery Co.

Prominent figure in Australian hairdressing and fashion, Alexander Fuchs, founded Fuchs Hair in 2018 with his sister and father. For almost two decades, the award-winning hairdresser has been helping people look and feel their best, including clients who are going through their own cancer diagnosis and post-treatment when they need support managing their ‘new’ regrown hair – which often grows back thicker, curlier or finer than before.

On World Cancer Research Day, Alex is generously giving ACRF full exclusive assess to his salon in Alexandria, recognised as one of Sydney’s best, hosting a morning of brave hair shaves, cuts and colours. The Fuchs Hair team will be on-hand to assist the Brave Shave participants with their bold and brave changes.

Since 1984, Australian Cancer Research Foundation (ACRF) has awarded 86 grants totalling more than $184 million to 44 research institutions – giving scientists the tools to make ground-breaking discoveries into the prevention, detection and treatment of ALL types of cancer.

To make this possible, ACRF relies on generous donors and fundraisers to get behind campaigns like Brave Shave. With an average of 444 Australians diagnosed with cancer every day, and two in five being diagnosed before the age of 85, the importance of world-class research has never been greater.

“World Cancer Research Day is an opportunity to shine a light on the importance and impact of bold, pioneering cancer research. We have come a long way in our prevention, detection and treatment of this devastating disease and we know by supporting more brave research we can change the meaning of a cancer diagnosis for future generations” said Carly Du Toit, General Manager, Fundraising and Marketing at ACRF.

“Initiatives like Brave Shave allow ACRF to continue backing the most brilliant and brightest minds as we strive to reach our vision of a world without cancer. Whether it’s a brave shave, a new cut or colour in your hair, you’ll be supporting Australia’s best cancer research.”

“Brave Shave is for the countless brave Australians who face cancer every day. The ones who bravely stare down a diagnosis and face it head on. Who bravely take on test after test, treatment after treatment. And, who bravely pick up the clippers to take control of their journey.”

“Hair grows back relatively quickly, but the impact of cutting-edge cancer research will last forever. Because together we can transform bravery into breakthroughs that save lives.”

The ACRF team will provide participants with fundraising support, tips and motivation along the way! There are a number of prizes to be won and incentives to be unlocked along the way.
