Australian Comedian and Media Personality Matt Okine is going the Extra Mile (or 10km) to Support Lifesaving Cancer Research

Matt Okine has felt the impact of losing a loved one to cancer. Now, he is teaming up with Australian Cancer Research Foundation as its new Ambassador.

This July, award-winning actor, writer and presenter, Matt Okine will swap the stage for the city streets as he takes on the Sydney Harbour 10K fun run in support of Australian Cancer Research Foundation (ACRF).

The Real Insurance Sydney Harbour 10K & 5K run, which takes place on Sunday, July 28, has proudly supported ACRF for the last three years. All funds raised will help ACRF back brilliant cancer research into new and improved ways to prevent, detect and treat all types of cancer.

On Sunday 28th July, Matt will explore Sydney’s sparkling harbour on foot by taking on the picturesque 10km course. He’s also encouraging others to get behind ACRF’s lifesaving work by taking part in the annual fun run and fundraising for ACRF.

Matt has felt the full impact of the disease after losing his mother to breast cancer at just 12 years of age.

“Almost everyone has been or will be impacted by cancer in some way. Losing my mum has taught me a lot about life, resilience and acceptance and, has pushed me to get outside of my comfort zone. I’m honoured to help raise money and awareness for ACRF through such a wonderful, albeit exhausting, event and help fund research that will positively impact so many families,” said Okine.

“It’s a privilege to be an ACRF ambassador. More funding for cancer research is essential so our best and brightest minds can find new ways to prevent, detect and treat this devastating disease. Now, I had better start training!”

Since 1984, ACRF has invested more than $184 million across 86 research projects around the country, supercharging scientific research with the technology and equipment.

ACRF CEO Kerry Strydom expressed her excitement at having Matt Okine on board.

“We can’t thank Matt enough for coming on board and showing his support for ACRF. He’s one of Australia’s most known and loved personalities, who shares his own experience with such humility and grace. We are certain he will make a significant impact within the community,” Mrs Strydom said.

“I would also like to extend our sincerest thanks to Real Insurance Sydney Harbour 10K & 5K organisers for choosing ACRF as its sole charity partner for the third consecutive year.”

“Two in five Australians will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime, so research could one day help yourself or someone you love. Together, we can all make a real difference.”

Anyone can register for the Sydney Harbour 10K & 5K run, from kids to adults and social walkers to elite runners. Sign up to the event here to support ACRF’s life-saving work.
