A fabulous family fun day for cancer research

1-200x300Hosting an event for family and friends is a great way to fundraise for cancer research and to acknowledge those loved ones who have been affected by cancer. Sydney resident, Kerrie Martino, recently hosted a fabulous ‘Family Fun Day’ – an event to raise money for the Australian Cancer Research Foundation (ACRF) – inspired by a family member’s personal journey with cancer.

“My cousin is currently ill, and it’s not always possible to visit her and help out in-person, so I thought this would be a great way to contribute”, said Kerrie.

“I did some research and realised I wanted to fundraise for cancer research and came across your organisation [ACRF]”.

“I really like that every dollar to you guys goes directly to research”.

Kerrie decided to host the event so that members of her local community could enjoy a nice day with their families and learn more about cancer research. She originally set a fundraising target of around $500 but as preparations got underway for the big day, a sense of community spirit began to grow.

“Campbelltown Council waived the hire costs due to the worthy cause…family and friends offered to bake, people donated sausages. My aunt and uncle, whose daughter is ill, also provided quite a bit of support. Everyone offered to help in some way”, said Kerrie.

Kerrie and her supporters also raised money with a raffle draw on the day. The raffle prizes were kindly donated by local members and supportive companies, including gift baskets, a signed jersey donated by Sydney FC, and special event tickets courtesy of Sydney Turf Club.

‘Sons of Mercury’ – a local band whose members are close friends of Kerrie’s son – donated their time to entertain event-goers, and family and friends provided fun activities for all the kids such as face painting and coloured hairspray.

The fun-filled day was a great success and with over $2800 raised for cancer research.

Kerrie’s cousin sadly couldn’t attend Family Fun Day, but Kerrie and her family made sure she was included in the event by making up special gift bags for her and her children.

Well done Kerrie and all of your supporters for organising such an amazing Family Fun Day, and warmest thanks for choosing ACRF to be a part of your special fundraising event.
