The Australian Cancer Research Foundation (ACRF) is dedicated to helping find the cures for cancer through continued funding for world-class research in Australia. The cancer charity foundation is dedicated to finding a cure for this devastating disease which affects one in three Australians.

Established in 1984 by the late Sir Peter Abeles and Lady (Sonia) McMahon, this cancer charity foundation has evolved into one of Australia’s leading not-for-profit organisations.

In 27 years we have awarded $79 million in cancer research grants to support leading edge Australian initiatives, ensuring our country remains at the forefront of global cancer research.

What makes the Australian Cancer Research Foundation different from any other cancer charity foundation?

  • Every dollar of every donation received goes to cancer research: All our expenses are paid from accumulated investment revenues earned by the cancer foundation. The last six years’ audited financial reports are available on our Financial Statements page.
  • We raise funds exclusively for cancer research, into prevention, diagnosis amd treatment options for all types of cancer.
  • We finance facilities not provided for by other funding bodies. Thus, the ACRF fills a vital gap in research funding in this country, receiving no government funding or assistance whatsoever. We are entirely funded by private donations, and receive no government funding or assistance.
  • Our cancer research grants are awarded based on the recommendations of a committee of 13 esteemed Australian researchers. This Medical Research Advisory Committee is chaired by Professor Ian Frazer, best known as co-creator of the cervical vancer vaccine and 2006 Australian of the Year.
  • In just the last seven years, donations from generous Australian and individuals and corporations have allowed this Cancer Foundation to fund almost $60 million in cancer research projects which will see real breakthroughs in treatment, prevention and diagnosis of cancer.

You can help with our cancer charity efforts

ACRF funding has made a real difference to the quality of life to patients with cancer, supporting the discovery of new ways to detect and treat the various cancers. This, in turn, has helped to improve cancer survival rates and provide a clearer understanding of the characteristics that cause cells to become cancerous.

The Australian Cancer Research Foundation is governed by an honorary Board of Trustees and is audited annually. Cancer research grants, between $1.5 million and $10 million, are awarded each year on the basis of scientific excellence.
