Spencer Hird may have logged his last City2Surf run in 2024, citing “My 50th run was a good round number to end with,” but he has not slowed down.
“…Tuesdays I bike, Wednesdays I rest, Thursdays I bike, Saturdays I park run, Sundays I take my partner, Diane, out for date night...”
Nearly 86-years-old, Spencer is still energised and loving life. “I have nice friends. It’s important to make friends across generations with a range of interests and activities.”
He also hasn’t slowed down in his commitment to supporting Australian Cancer Research Foundation.
He lost his wife, Heather, to bowel cancer 33 years ago, but in addition to event fundraising, Spencer has chosen to leave a gift in his Will to ACRF.
“It’s important to support causes that are worthwhile. I lost my wife to cancer, and I am so proud of our daughter who received 1st Class Honours in Molecular Biology, going on to do cancer research at the Garvan Institute for several years before starting a family of her own.
“Based on my daughter’s experience, I know how difficult it is for researchers to get grants. Every little bit helps.”
While he’s given up City2Surf, he has not given up running. He runs 5 kms every Saturday morning and has logged 380 park runs. “I’m aiming for 400—I like nice round numbers.” That’s 2000 kms, and an example of what can be achieved with “a little bit over time”.
Whether it's logging a few kilometres every week, or donating a few dollars each month, or a percentage of your estate in your Will, every little bit does add up.
Our thanks to Spencer for his continued support, and we’re cheering him on as he approaches this next running goal!
