Researchers from three ACRF-funded cancer research centres have received accolades at the 2012 NSW Premier’s Awards for outstanding cancer research.
Hosted by the Cancer Institute NSW, the awards honour the work of the State’s most innovative and dynamic cancer researchers, and so we congratulate these esteemed scientists:
1. Excellence in Translational Research Professors Michelle Haber, Glenn Marshall, and Murray Norris – Children’s Cancer Institute Australia (CCIA) for Medical Research
This team from CCIA (a recipient of two ACRF grants totaling $3.6m) have been acknowledged for their ground-breaking work in testing children with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia (ALL) and improving survival rates. Their minimal residual disease testing (MRD) can predict which children suffering ALL are at the highest risk of relapse on standard therapy, triggering individualised treatment to commence at earlier stages.
2. Outstanding Cancer Research Fellow Professor Richard Scolyer – Royal Prince Alfred Hospital (RPA)
This award highlights Professor Scolyer’s innovative work in improving the management and treatment of people with melanoma. The ACRF is proud that yet another of our grant recipients – RPA itself with a grant of $1.2m – has had one of its team acknowledged for their fantastic work in the field of cancer research.
3. Wildfire Award Pancreatic Cancer Research Group – the Garvan Institute
The Wildfire Award was established this year to recognise an individual or team contribution to cancer care or research practice, as measured through a highly cited publication. The Pancreatic Cancer Research Group at the Garvan Institute have thus been acknowledged for their work into improving the current management of patients with pancreatic cancer. The Garvan Institute is a three-time recipient of ACRF grants, having received $6.1m in total from the Foundation.
