Prof Perry F BartlettProfessor Perry F. Bartlett FAA

Director of Queensland Brain Institute (Program Leader)

Professor Bartlett was raised and educated in Melbourne and, following the completion of his PhD at the University of Melbourne, undertook postdoctoral studies at Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore and University College, London.

On returning to Australia, he introduced neuroscience into the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research and proceeded to develop a strong program of discovery, which has led to several paradigm shifts in the understanding of the nervous system.

Prof Bartlett is now the founding Director of the Queensland Brain Institute (QBI) and Professor of Molecular Neuroscience at the University of Queensland. He is also a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science, and currently holds a Federation Fellowship (Australian Research Council) and an Honorary Senior Principal Research Fellowship (National Health and Medical Research Council), the two highest federally funded accolades for Australian scientists.

Over the past thirty years Prof Bartlett’s research has focused on understanding central nervous system function in health and disease, an issue of vital importance to the Australian community as we confront the growing social and economic cost of neurological and mental health conditions, which currently account for almost 50 per cent of this nation’s burden of disease. His laboratory’s work has led to the revolutionary concept that the brain, even in the aged, has the innate ability to repair and regenerate by producing new neurons. This is leading to the development of new therapeutic strategies to stimulate functional recovery following stroke, ageing dementia and depression.

Prof Bartlett’s work has also resulted in commercial and IP development. He is the holder of eight US patents related to research outcomes and five Australian patents.
