Principal Research Fellow and Senior Member

Research Interests: Assoc/Prof Greg Woods’ research interests are primarily aimed at how cancer cells escape detection by the immune system. One aspect of his research programme is to understand how exposure to excess sunshine in early life alters the immune system and increases the risk of skin cancer later in life. Vitamin D is being evaluated for its ability to regulate the immune systems as well as its potential to protect against skin cancer. The other major research programme is to evaluate the immune system of the Tasmanian devil and to understand how devil facial tumour disease can be transmitted between devils with the ultimate objective to develop strategies to protect devils from this infectious cancer.

Research Projects:

1.      Evaluation of Natural Products on the Immune Response & Other Related Health Parameters

2.      Investigating the Use of Metallothionein to Prevent Skin Cancer

3.      The Immune Response of the Tasmanian Devil & Devil Facial Tumour Disease

4.      The Influence of Vitamin D & UVB Radiation on the Development of the Skin Immune System & its Relevance to the Development of Skin Cancer
